Keeping Kids Safe in Internet Safety Month

June is Internet Safety Month!

Similar to Safe Internet Day, which we celebrated in February, Internet Safety Month focuses on ‘common sense’ internet safety practices, especially for kids and teens. In addition to things like talking to kids about internet rules, making strong passwords, and not putting personal information online, Internet Safety Month raises awareness for the dangerous consequences of improper internet use.

Organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have joined in for Internet Safety Month, focusing on serious topics like Online Enticement, Sextortion, and Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). We won’t go into too much detail on those here, but you can read all about it on their website!

Today let’s take a look at 5 quick internet safety tips to discuss with your kids!

  1. Set the Ground Rules – Internet habits may have changed a lot over the last year, and maybe your screen time rules changed too! Involving your kids in setting rules is a great way to keep them on track and motivated to actually stick to your guidelines. Some common ground rules might be no devices during meals, school work before social media, and no devices at bedtime.
  2. Get to Know their Programs – This one might sound a little silly, but spend some time getting to know their favorite platforms! Play a game with them, ask them to show you around, just spend some time getting to know the ins and outs of the websites your kids spend a lot of time on. This makes it easier to see if something may be off!
  3. Monitor their Monitors – Parental controls should be standard at this point, especially if you have the Wisper Home app! However, there are some things that wouldn’t be caught by a filtering program, like chat functions on approved websites. Having your workstations set up in a way that adults can quickly check the activities on children’s devices allows you to keep an extra close eye on them!
  4. Get Some ‘Face Time’ – We all spend so much time with our devices, now more than ever. It’s important for all of us to get some real face-to-face quality time with people, especially our families. Put down the phones, close the laptops, and have some fun together!
  5. Be Honest – Honesty is the best policy when it comes to internet safety. Encouraging honest communication between you and your kids will help understand the importance of the rules and why we follow them, but also hopefully they’ll be honest with you about what they’re doing online!
