How and Why Wisper Was Created

Back in 2003, CEO & Founder Nathan Stooke helped a neighbor two miles down the road get internet and quickly realized many others nearby were still unconnected. Determined to fix that, he convinced his wife to max out their credit cards and launched Wisper from his 1986 Honda Accord with a fold-up ladder.

Twenty-two years later, Wisper serves more than 20,000 subscribers across six states and employs over 200 people. From its humble beginnings in O’Fallon, Illinois, the company has expanded throughout Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma, focusing on communities often overlooked by larger providers.

In 2018, Wisper was awarded $220.3 million through the Federal Communications Commission Connect America Fund Phase II Auction, accelerating its mission to close the digital divide.

Today, Wisper remains committed to delivering reliable, high-speed internet to underserved communities – because we believe internet should be as dependable as any essential utility.
